El Minya Quarries

A photography project exploring the daily lives and working conditions of quarry workers in El Minya, Egypt.

In El Minya, Egypt, quarries stretch across the landscape.
Local workers shape limestone into white bricks, facing a tough and demanding environment every day.
From the first light of dawn, the workers begin their long day, shaping limestone until night falls.
Above, the mountain’s natural surface blends with the street, while deep below, its quarries stretch in silent grandeur.
Each worker has a specific role; some adjust the small railway for the cutting machine, others operate the cutter, handle maintenance, or arrange the bricks, all working together in the quarry.
The work environment is harsh, filled with dust they breathe in every day and constant danger, yet they endure it all to provide for their families and earn a living.
They are everyday heroes.

At the end of the shift, the white bricks are loaded onto large trucks, ready to be transported from the quarries.
